Synopsis
God’s Own Country (2017) is a raw, intimate, and profoundly human love story, unfolding amid the windswept vastness of the Yorkshire countryside — a film that delves into loneliness, identity, and the quiet salvation found in unexpected connection.
At its heart is Johnny Saxby (Josh O’Connor), a young farmer anesthetized by isolation and routine. His days blur together in the relentless demands of his family’s sheep farm; his nights dissolve into alcohol and hollow encounters that leave him emptier than before. Everything changes with the arrival of Gheorghe (Alec Secăreanu), a soft-spoken Romanian migrant worker hired for lambing season.
What begins with friction and distrust slowly deepens into something far more delicate — an intimacy shaped through hard labor, long silences, and the courage to let another person in. As the harsh landscape gradually softens into a place of color, warmth, and renewal, Johnny discovers a truth he’s spent years avoiding: love is not a weakness but a lifeline — and being loved can remake a man entirely.
Filmed with striking realism and an almost documentary-like restraint, Francis Lee’s debut captures both the unvarnished brutality of rural life and the transcendent beauty of human connection. Though often compared to Brokeback Mountain, God’s Own Country stands wholly on its own — a fiercely personal, hopeful, and deeply felt story about tearing down the walls we build to survive, only to discover they keep us from living.

⭐ A film of quiet power and aching beauty — a reminder that even in the harshest soil, love can take root and flourish.
