Luca 2: Beyond the Surface (2024) – Official Trailer Review

Pixar dives back into the shimmering waters of childhood wonder with Luca 2: Beyond the Surface (2024), and the official trailer promises a sequel filled with magic, identity, and a deeper emotional current beneath its sunny surface.

Set a few years after the events of the first film, Luca 2 follows our beloved sea monster-turned-schoolboy as he returns to Portorosso for summer break — only to discover strange tidal shifts and ancient sea legends coming to life. Luca (voiced again by Jacob Tremblay) is older, more curious, and now questioning where he truly belongs: the human world he’s grown to love, or the oceanic heritage he left behind.

The trailer reunites us with fan-favorites Alberto (Jack Dylan Grazer), Giulia, and even Machiavelli the cat — but also teases a mysterious new sea creature named Neri (voiced by Xolo Maridueña), who leads Luca on an underwater journey to uncover the origin of their kind. Their adventure brings them face to face with glowing coral cities, mythical guardians, and the truth behind the ancient warning: “Not all monsters are meant to surface.”

Visually, the sequel is as gorgeous as ever — golden Italian coastlines above, bioluminescent dreamscapes below. The color palette is more mature and mystical, and the underwater sequences pulse with wonder and quiet intensity. Music, once again, plays a heartfelt role, blending Mediterranean flair with ethereal themes.

But it’s the emotional core that shines. The trailer hints at themes of growth, cultural roots, chosen family, and the fears of leaving behind who you used to be. A powerful line from Luca’s grandmother stands out: “To go forward, you must swim deeper.”

If the trailer is anything to go by, Luca 2: Beyond the Surface isn’t just a charming sequel — it’s a coming-of-age tale soaked in heart, discovery, and Pixar’s trademark storytelling magic. Prepare to laugh, cry, and dive back into something beautiful.
