Marry My Dead Body (Taiwan, 2022)
A unique and creative film, offering a rare combination of genres: comedy, queer, bromance, detective, crime, mafia, thriller, action. Director Cheng Wei-hao handles this mix skillfully with a balanced pacing and an excellent script by Lai Chih-liang.
The story revolves around Wu (Greg Han) – a straightforward, masculine, even somewhat racist police officer, who accidentally picks up a red envelope while searching for evidence at a crime scene. According to Chinese tradition, anyone who accidentally picks up a red envelope left by the family of the deceased will be forced to “ghostly marry” that person, otherwise they will suffer bad luck for the rest of their lives. The ghost husband is Mao (Austin Lin) – a gay man who died mysteriously in a car accident.
From here, a dramatic, action-packed adventure unfolds, both humorous and touching, and one of the first films on screen to explore the theme of “gay ghost marriage”.
The film is now available on Netflix – a fun and profound entertainment experience that is sure to surprise and move you.
